| SIA's Emergency Fund We provide financial assistance to Tibetans, in extreme cases of need, when other Tibetan government or non-governmental organizations are unable to help. Most often, funds are give in cases of medical emergency, such as to pay for TB and other medicines; school fees, travel back to Tibet & other basic survival needs. The following are just a few of the individuals and families in need who we've helped: For the past few years, we have supported Ama-la (Tib. Mother) Tsechyi's family by purchasing the Tibetan Freedom bracelets she makes. When her baby died a few years ago, we gave her funds to help pay for the traditional prayer ceremonies. Her oldest daughter, Sonam Dolma suffered from Rheumatic heart disease. In 1997, we paid for her medical tests at the Heart Clinic in Chandigarh, India, and gave her money so she could afford Tibetan medicine for her condition. In 2003, when she finally needed triple valve replacement surgery, we collaborated with the Department of Health (CTA) and the Dharamshala Earthville Institute to raise the needed funds and find the best medical services available. We are happy to report that she has been steadily recovering since then. Over the years, we have offered support to members of Ama-lak Lobsang Deckyi Khanning's family to help pay for diagnostic medical testing and for medicines. Recently, Ama-lak has had a mysterious intestinal illness and has been unable to work. As well, one of her children suffers from a chronic ulcer. We paid for her endoscopy tests and medicines. Ama-lak is an ex-political prisoner and was the daughter of a noble family from the Lhasa area. Ama-lak Khanning Lobsang Deckyi CURRENTLY IN NEED: Tsering Lhamo, age 30, a new arrival from Tibet, has recently had a baby. She makes less than $30 per month. Her husband is an unemployed artist. His Mother is very ill and requires daily medications. To cover their living expenses, they are working hard to get orders for the cards and paintings he makes. We have been able to offer them help due to the kindness and generosity of Jamtse Tsokpa Organization, allowing us to purchase some of his work at above the asking price and to offer a donation to help them get back on their feet. Sonam Dolma, age 18, lives in the Tibetan settlement of Mundgod, South India. She suffers from a neurological disease which is treatable with medicines. Her family cannot afford the costs of medicines. Though we are pursuing help from the Health Department for her, we are also working to raise funds to help her.
Providing Service for the Tibetan Government in Exile and NGO's Solutions in Action continues to provide requested services for various departments of the Tibetan government in exile (CTA: Central Tibetan Administration). Upon request of the Department of Education, we researched, wrote and helped coordinate publication of a publication called, "Education in Exile: An Informative Guide to the Department of Education." Written to an audience of western supporters, it continues to raise financial support for schools and vocational training programs for Tibetans in 85 Settlements. Upon request, we have also offered resources and teachers for the Environment & Development Desk's (DIIR) teacher and government training programs. We have provided educational materials for the Health Department, and are working closely with them now to train their staff in 'Preventative Environmental Health'. For the Tibetan Welfare Office, we have developed educational materials, organized educational events, provided workshops for TCV's Youth Education Center, Indian Schools and coordinated volunteer placement.
